Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (August 9, 1945), and the Soviet declaration of war on Japan, Emperor Hirohito issued a radio broadcast on August 15, 1945, announcing Japan's unconditional surrender. The formal surrender ceremony took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, officially ending World War II.
