Battle of Cape Matapan

WW2 Mediterranean Naval Battle · 27–29 March 1941

The Battle of Cape Matapan (27–29 March 1941) was a naval engagement between British and Italian forces off the southern coast of Greece. The Royal Navy, commanded by Admiral Cunningham, decisively defeated the Italian Regia Marina, sinking three heavy cruisers and two destroyers with the loss of over 2,300 Italian sailors. The British suffered no ship losses. The battle effectively ended the Italian threat to British naval operations in the Eastern Mediterranean.
